New Member Profile: CHARLENE BAND

Charlene and her husband moved to Winchester fourteen years ago from Toronto.  She is an active member of the Town, even becoming a Town Meeting Member.   She enjoys living in Winchester and feels that you have to be involved, saying, "If you don't step up to the plate, then you can't complain."

Charlene loves talking with the residents of Winchester.  As a member of the Historical Society, she was part of the Living History project and interviewed several prominent residents to record their memories of events that have taken place in the town over the years.

One of the things Charlene and her husband like most about living in this area is looking at the New England architecture.  Coming from Toronto, a relatively new city, Charleneappreciates the old houses that are still rock-solid.  In keeping with this interest, Charlene belongs to the Historical Commission and is involved with the implementation of the master plan for the Wright-Locke Farm.  This past summer she and her husband traveled to Shelburne Farm near Burlington, Vermont, a farm once owned by the Vanderbilts.  The last owners could no longer keep it running as a farm, so the owners’children got together and turned the mansion into a successful Bed and Breakfast.  Charlene spent time talking with the proprietors to learn how they turned the farm into such a treasure --  with Winchester in the back of her mind.

Charlene was introduced to the Winchester League through a friend and joined three years ago.  She appreciates the good work the League does and participates in League activities, such as helping out at the recent candidates' forum.

In her limited spare time, Charlene likes to work in her large perennial garden.
