Fundraising Letter, 2006

September 1, 2006

Dear Winchester resident,

The Winchester League of Women Voters sprang into existence immediately after the passage of women’s right to vote and has been an integral part of our town’s civic life
ever since. Its goals, as a non-partisan volunteer organization, are to encourage the
active and informed participation of citizens in government, to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and to influence public policy through education and advocacy.
A sampling of our program follows.

  • Website development by a local league member:  www.lwvwinchester.org. The website features election information, event alerts and reporting, and links to other resources.  It is a good starting point for information on government that represents you.
  • The Winchester League has an extensive Voter Services program: registering high school seniors during an educational and inspiring assembly, last year resulting in 111 new applicants; sponsoring several candidates’ forums filmed for airing on WinCAM; providing rides to the polls; and participating in Town Day.
  • This past year the Winchester League again produced a series of Discussion Groups at the Winchester Public Library—free and open to the public—exploring topics such as the Proposition 2.5, social security, prison reforms, and tour and discussion of the transfer station.   Experts and officials present the topic and answer audience questions.
  • Our “Moveable Feast”, honoring all Town employees at a December luncheon, is becoming a well-attended tradition. The Winchester League treats employees to a thank-you “feast”. The “moveable” comes from its location—Town Hall, then the DPW Building, next the Public Safety Building, and the Library, then around again.
  • Member events included lobbying activities, annual meeting, lobby day at the State House, state and national convention opportunities, email updates of state and national league activities.
  • Our monthly Bulletin goes out to all League members and to all Town Meeting members and elected officials.

We are an inclusive and diverse non-partisan grassroots organization, welcoming women and men into our activities. The league’s activities open and in service to the public.  And, although our membership fee covers national and state activities, the League of Women Voters of Winchester relies on the good support of our Winchester friends to meet the costs of local service programs. This is why we write to you today: We hope that you value our efforts and will consider contributing to our work.

Sincerely,

The Steering Committee of the Winchester League of Women Voters
